Plot summary
Shadow, an alien hedgehog, arrives in Oklahoma inside a meteorite in 1974 and is taken by the U.S. military. At a G.U.N. research facility, Professor Gerald Robotnik experiments on Shadow's power, and the hedgehog becomes close friends with Maria, Gerald's granddaughter. Fifty years later, Shadow escapes when someone breaks into a G.U.N. prison's systems off the coast of Japan. In Green Hills, Montana, Sonic marks the day he arrived on Earth with Tails, Knuckles and his adoptive parents, Tom and Maddie Wachowski. G.U.N. Director Rockwell recruits the three of them to capture Shadow in Tokyo, but he overpowers them and escapes. Learning from Commander Walters about Shadow's past, they decide to go after him without G.U.N.'s help.

- Jim Carrey agreed to return as Dr. Robotnik only if the script was 'written in gold ink,' so director Jeff Fowler printed it out in 24-carat ink, estimated to be worth about $100,000.
- Keanu Reeves was cast as Shadow the Hedgehog partly because his John Wick performances served as a 'perfect, albeit unconventional, audition' for the character's dark vibe.
- Jim Carrey spent three hours in a makeup chair to play Gerald Robotnik, helped design the prosthetics, and had actor Brendan Murphy double for the other character during his dual-role scenes.
