Plot summary
In 1864, a band of Confederate soldiers held in a Union stockade at Plattsburgh, New York, breaks out and heads for Montréal, Quebec. From Canada they intend to cross the border and strike St. Albans, Vermont, taking the money from its banks to refill the Confederacy's empty coffers and burning buildings in reprisal for Sherman's March to the Sea, hoping to tie down Union troops. Major Neal Benton, who leads them, goes into the town first, posing as a Canadian businessman, to learn its layout. He boards with Katy Bishop, a young war widow, and her son Larry, and grows friendly with the two of them. The rest of the raiders wait in an abandoned barn or pass as traveling peddlers.
