Phyllis Thaxter
Biography
Phyllis Thaxter was an American actress who began on the stage before moving to films. Born in Portland, Maine, she replaced Dorothy McGuire in the Broadway play Claudia when McGuire left for Hollywood. In 1944 she signed with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and made her movie debut in Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo (1944), playing Ellen Lawson. She went on to appear in the film noir Bewitched (1945) as a woman with split personality, in Blood on the Moon (1948), and in Springfield Rifle (1952). After that she worked mainly in television, appearing in series such as Rawhide, The Alfred Hitchcock Hour, and The Twilight Zone, and she returned to Broadway in Take Her, She's Mine in 1961. She also appeared in The World of Henry Orient (1964) and played Martha Kent in Superman (1978), with Glenn Ford as Jonathan Kent. In 1992 she appeared in Murder, She Wrote, and in 2003 she had a seconds-long appearance in Midsomer Murders.
