Plot summary
Jack DeVries, a quiet Los Angeles man with no criminal record, robs a Wells Fargo bank, kills the security guards inside and leads the police on a high-speed chase. Detective Thomas Beck's blockade stops him; he is hit several times and taken to a hospital, where a doctor tells Beck and his partner, Cliff Willis, that he is not expected to survive the night. At headquarters, Beck and his supervisor, Lieutenant John Masterson, meet FBI Special Agent Lloyd Gallagher, who is assigned to the case and rushes to the hospital. There DeVries awakens, disconnects his life support and forces open the mouth of a comatose patient, Jonathan P. Miller; a slug-like alien passes into him. Gallagher finds DeVries dead and Miller's bed abandoned. Beck refuses Gallagher's request to put out an alert on Miller, who has no criminal record.

- The police station seen throughout The Hidden was a set built into raw space at the Lincoln Heights Jail, director Jack Sholder recalled in a 2000 interview with Tim Hunter.
- Writer Jim Kouf wanted to direct The Hidden, but when the studios refused he lost interest in the script; Jack Sholder then rewrote it to heighten its themes of what it means to be human.
