Biography
Lauren Vélez is an American actress born in Brooklyn, New York, whose career has moved between television, film and the stage. Her first performing job was in the national touring company of Dreamgirls, and she later understudied Phylicia Rashad in Into the Woods and played Off-Broadway in Much Ado About Nothing. Her film debut came with I Like It Like That (1994), which earned her Independent Spirit and Desi Award nominations for best lead actress. Her first major television role came in 1995 as Nina Moreno on New York Undercover, then she played Dr. Gloria Nathan on HBO's Oz and Elena on Ugly Betty. Her best known roles include María LaGuerta on Dexter and Rio Morales in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018) and later in Across the Spider-Verse (2023). She won a best supporting actress award at the 2006 Long Island International Film Expo and received the Rita Moreno HOLA Award in 2010.
