Plot summary
The machines' war on humanity began when a scientist built an intelligent robot for peaceful progress and his government seized it, rebuilding it as the Fabrication Machine, which produces an army of war machines. The scientist answered with nine rag dolls called Stitchpunks, each marked with a number and given part of his soul through a talisman, and he died finishing the last of them, 9. Machines have wiped out all organic life and gone dormant, and 9 wakes into their ruined world. He meets 2, an elderly inventor, who fits him with a voice box. The Cat Beast, the last machine still active, attacks them and carries 2 off. A one-eyed healer named 5 brings 9 to Sanctuary, a cathedral tower where other numbered dolls shelter under 1. 9 and 5 set out to rescue 2.

- 9 was the second animated feature film released by Focus Features, the first being Coraline, written and directed by Henry Selick; the trailer for 9 preceded Coraline when it was shown in theaters and released on DVD.
- Despite the silence from Acker, in January 2017 the Facebook profile of the character "the Scientist" was updated with a rather cryptic message; the profile had been inactive since 2009, leading some to speculate the teasing of a sequel.
- Part of the film's marketing strategy was its release date of September 9, 2009, a date that could be promoted as "9/9/09" to echo the title.
- Its opening weekend landed it at No. 2 behind I Can Do Bad All By Myself, with approximately $10,740,446 and $15,160,926 for its five-day opening.
- The Cat Beast, a cat-like ambush predator, appeared in the original short film with a green eye, changed to a red eye in the feature film along with some other changes.
- Before the theatrical release of the film, Acker and producer Tim Burton stated they were open for a sequel, depending on how well the film was received.
