Plot summary

Bonnie and Sam are flying when their plane goes down in the wilderness of British Columbia. The crash kills the pilot and the adult who was looking after them, leaving the brother and sister alone in the forest. An Aboriginal Canadian man, Khonanesta, finds them and takes them under his protection. He tells them that a group of bear poachers is working in the woods and that the two of them cannot stay. He guides them through the backcountry, away from the poachers, on the way to their parents. Khonanesta speaks of a bear he calls Grandfather, which he counts among his people, and the siblings travel with him.
