Plot summary
Mary Brady and her son Charles are the last two of their kind, shapeshifters who must drain the life energy of young women to survive. They have left Bodega Bay, California, and live in a house in Travis, Indiana, where Charles enrolls at the local high school. Plenty of girls there take an interest in him, but he chooses Tanya Robertson, a classmate in his creative writing class, and courts her in order to feed himself and his starving mother. Both can pass as human and use telekinesis and illusion to cover what they are. Domestic cats are their one weakness: the animals are not fooled by the pair's illusions and attack them on sight.

- Sleepwalkers had to be submitted to the MPAA five times before it was given an R rating; cuts included Mary Brady spitting out Captain Soames's bitten-off fingers and the corkscrew being pulled from Charles Brady's eye.
- John Carpenter was offered a cameo in Sleepwalkers but was busy filming Memoirs of an Invisible Man, and George A. Romero's planned cameo was canceled because he was sick; Mick Garris instead used Tobe Hooper and Clive Barker.
- Director Mick Garris added two things that were not in Stephen King's script: an opening title sequence from a Book of Arcane Knowledge he invented, and the love scene between Charles Brady (Brian Krause) and Mary Brady (Alice Krige).
- Sleepwalkers was the first film Stephen King wrote that was not based on one of his preexisting works.
