Plot summary
Hatch Harrison, an antiques dealer, is driving home from a lake cabin with his wife Lindsey and their daughter Regina when their car hits a truck and goes into a river. Regina escapes; Hatch is thought dead. At the hospital, Dr. Jonas Nyebern's resuscitation team revives him after two hours, and a nurse questions bringing back a patient gone so long. In his sleep Hatch sees young women killed; the women are reported missing. The murderer is linked to him and sees what he sees, and in one vision his daughter's face replaces a victim's. When Regina goes to a club, a man calling himself Vassago greets her. Hatch tries to warn her, but Lindsey and the police think he needs psychiatric help.

- Novelist Dean Koontz was so unhappy with Hideaway that he tried to force TriStar to take his name off the credits, and he would only let his novel Phantoms be filmed if he could approve the final version.
- Koontz's own account says pre-production was promising under Mike Medavoy, who ordered a rewrite of the first script at Koontz's request, but Medavoy was removed and the new production staff never told Koontz about the finished film, which departed drastically from his novel.
- The killer Vassago's hideaway was built inside the abandoned Britannia Mine in British Columbia, where the 1994 shoot took place.
