Biography
Stephen King is an American author from Portland, Maine, known for horror fiction as well as suspense, crime, fantasy, science fiction, and mystery. His debut novel Carrie (1974) made his name in horror, and the novella collection Different Seasons (1982) marked his first major step beyond the genre. He has written around 200 short stories, most of them collected, and has also published under the pseudonym Richard Bachman. King's screenwriting debut was Creepshow (1982), and his fiction became the basis for films such as The Shining (1980), Stand by Me (1986), Misery (1990), The Shawshank Redemption (1994), and The Green Mile (1999). He also made his directing debut with Maximum Overdrive (1986) and wrote miniseries including The Stand (1994). Among his awards are the O. Henry Award and the Los Angeles Times Book Prize for 11/22/63 (2011).
