Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Final Destination (2000)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Jeffrey Reddick wrote the story as a spec X-Files script after reading, on a flight home to Kentucky, about a woman whose mother told her not to take a particular plane; she changed flights and that plane crashed. Reddick's thought was: what if she had been supposed to die on it.
- In Reddick's original draft Death was an unseen force and the survivors were adults. New Line made him turn them into teenagers because Scream had just been a hit.
- Almost every character is named after a horror film-maker: Billy Hitchcock for Alfred Hitchcock, the Brownings and Tod Waggner for Tod Browning, Valerie Lewton for Val Lewton, Terry Chaney for Lon Chaney, and the two FBI agents, Weine and Schreck, for Robert Wiene and Max Schreck.
- The script's coincidences came out of the writers' own lives. One of them, waiting for a flight at Vancouver airport, heard John Denver over the loudspeaker, remembered that Denver had died in a plane crash, thought it was weird, and wrote that moment into the film.
- The plane interior sat on a three-ton hydraulic gimbal: a 45,000-pound set that took two months to build and held 89 people, tilting up to 45 degrees side to side and 60 degrees front to back. Director James Wong said he was afraid he would have 40 extras vomiting.
- The exploding jet was a miniature Boeing 747 about 10 feet long with landing gear machined from metal, and visual effects supervisor Ariel Velasco-Shaw had it thrown roughly 40 feet into the air so the fireball would read as full size.
- Production designer John Willet "skewed" the film's sets, forcing the perspective so that nothing is quite square, and built two versions of virtually every set: one used before the crash and one after it.
- Jeffrey Reddick had pictured Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst as Alex and Clear, and producer Craig Perry wanted Jessica Biel for Clear.
