Sheila Tousey
Biography
Sheila Tousey is a Native American actress who began dancing in childhood and came to acting through theater studies. She was born in Keshena, Wisconsin, and grew up on Menominee and Stockbridge-Munsee reservations. Her first stage work came at the University of New Mexico, where she had entered a law program, later switched her major to English, and took theater arts classes. After earning her degree, she studied acting at Tisch School of the Arts at New York University. Thunderheart (1992) gave her her first film part, and she also appeared that year in Medicine River. Her later screen roles have been varied, among them appearances on Law & Order. Starting in 2002, she acted in four films based on Tony Hillerman's mystery books, which feature Native Americans of the Southwest. In 1994, she directed An Evening at the Warbonnet, her first play, staged at the University of New Mexico.
