Plot summary
A pox outbreak and the Jacobite uprising leave the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire without a safe host, so they announce that they will stay at the Yorkshire mansion of Sir Chauncey and Lady Savage, who live there with their daughter Fanny and have almost no money left. Chauncey and Lady Savage sell the family heirlooms and take on enormous debt to prepare the house for the visit. Their valet, Reginald Halifax, and their chambermaid, Dorothy Neville, are secretly a couple, and they scheme to end the Savages' marriage and to profit from the family's ruin. A doctor forbids Chauncey, who has inflammatory arthritis and gout, to eat red meat or drink wine, and Chauncey ignores the order.
