Plot summary
Simon Spier lives in a suburb of Atlanta with his parents, Emily and Jack, and his sister Nora, and he has three close friends: Nick, Leah, and Abby. He is gay, and he has told none of them. When a classmate posts an anonymous confession online under the name Blue, Simon writes back as Jacques, and the two exchange messages about the things they cannot say out loud. Simon wants to know who Blue is, but Blue is not ready to be found. Then Martin, a classmate, finds the emails and threatens to make them public unless Simon helps him win over Abby. Simon cannot explain to his friends why he is suddenly arranging things, and he still does not know which of his classmates is Blue.

- Notable as the first film by a major film studio about a gay teenage romance, it grossed $66.7 million worldwide against a production budget of $10 to $17 million and became the 15th-highest-grossing teen film at the domestic box office since 1980.
- Following the film's release, celebrities including Jennifer Garner, Kristen Bell, Neil Patrick Harris, Matt Bomer, Andrew Rannells and Jesse Tyler Ferguson bought out theaters and offered free screenings of the film, because they believed it conveyed an important message.
- Audiences polled by CinemaScore gave the film an average grade of A+ on an A+ to F scale, which makes it one of fewer than 90 films in the history of the service to earn such a score.
- Filming officially ended on April 23, 2017, two days earlier than scheduled, an effort director Greg Berlanti made to offset the cost of paying royalties for the most expensive songs on the film's soundtrack.
