Plot summary
Danny works for a London record label. He visits Cornwall for a colleague's stag weekend, and his boss dares him to come home with the signatures of the village's sea-shanty singers. The fishermen are wary of the music industry and show no interest in commercial success. Danny, who treats the challenge as a joke at first, approaches them anyway. Winning the respect of the singers and their families proves difficult, since they set friendship and their community above fame. The longer he stays, the deeper he is drawn into the life of the village, and he grows close to Alwyn, whose father is one of the fishermen. That bond complicates the task his boss has given him.

- The film was inspired by the true story of Fisherman's Friends, a group of Cornish fishermen from Port Isaac who were signed by Universal Records and achieved a top 10 hit with their debut album of traditional sea shanties.
- Noel Clarke was credited 'and Noel Clarke' on the UK poster but his image was not featured on it; writing on Twitter, Clarke said "not one of these other actors spoke up for me when I was left off the poster".
- Two-Michelin-starred Port Isaac chef Nathan Outlaw has a cameo role in the film as a man who has unwisely parked his car where the tide can swamp it.
- All members of the real band have cameos in the film, and they also worked as consultants on the production.
- A stage musical called Fisherman's Friends: The Musical, based on the band's true story and the 2019 film, made its world premiere at the Hall for Cornwall in Truro in October 2021, written by Brad Birch and directed by James Grieve.
- A sequel called Fisherman's Friends: One and All, about the band singing at Glastonbury, was released on 19 August 2022.
