Plot summary
In County Mayo, Ireland, Rosemary Muldoon and Anthony Reilly are introverted farmers in their late thirties who have lived on adjoining land their whole lives. Rosemary has loved Anthony since childhood, but he shows her no interest. Anthony's father Tony believes his son is not sane and worries that the Reilly line will end with him, so he weighs selling the farm to his nephew Adam, a banker in New York City. In the fields Anthony hears a voice urging him to go, though he keeps its destination to himself. To secure the farm he plans to offer Rosemary his late mother's ring, then misplaces it outdoors and hunts for it with a metal detector. Adam turns up for Tony's seventy-fifth birthday and flirts with Rosemary.
