Plot summary
At SOS Distress, a Paris telephone helpline for people in despair, Pierre and Thérèse are on duty for the Christmas Eve shift. Pierre is stuffy and self-righteous, Thérèse well-meaning but naïve, and neither of them wanted the holiday hours. The elevator in their building is out of order, and unwanted visitors keep coming up to the office. Katia, a depressed transvestite, arrives and makes advances toward Pierre. A neighbor from the same building turns up with pastries for them to sample. Then comes Josette, pregnant, hiding from her violent fiancé Félix, who wants her home to make the Christmas Eve dinner.
