Plot summary
Paris, 1640. Cyrano de Bergerac, a poet and a soldier, is admired for his courage and his skill with a sword. He is sensitive about his enormous nose but puts on a show of pride in it, and he loves his cousin Roxane, certain that she would never want him as he looks. To raise himself in her eyes he interrupts a play at the Hôtel du Bourgogne and beats a marquis in a duel. Roxane then asks him to visit and tells him she has fallen for Christian de Neuvillette, a new member of the Cadets de Gascogne, the unit Cyrano serves in. Christian can hardly talk to women, so Cyrano proposes to write his letters for him, and Christian agrees.
