Plot summary
The Louis XIV high school in Versailles has the worst baccalauréat record in the country: none of its pupils graduates, and the class likes it that way. Failing keeps them free to enjoy themselves, and the permissive headmaster Léon Jumaucourt lets them carry on. His wife Lucie takes over and imposes discipline, helped by her husband, her daughter and the school's imposing new sports teacher, Mr. Bruce. Baptiste 'Bebel' Lavalle leads the pupils' pranks, and Lucie and her staff become the targets of their retaliation. A pupil named Gaston Pourquier joins the class during the year, notable for his age. Bebel also courts Caroline, the girlfriend of his classmate Julien Senquin.
