Plot summary
Food is scarce in post-apocalyptic France and grain serves as money. Clapet, the landlord, runs the butcher shop on the ground floor of a rundown apartment building, and the tenants above depend on the meat he sells. He places a notice in the newspaper for a handyman, and Louison, an unemployed circus clown, takes the position. Louison proves an excellent worker, and he carries a remarkable trick knife. On his rounds he picks up a package a mailman has dropped and brings it to Clapet's daughter, Julie, who tells him it holds sweets and asks him to spend the evening with her. The two grow close, while several tenants take to Louison and others worry about their own supply of meat.
