Plot summary
Renato Baldi and Albin Mougeotte have been together for 20 years in Saint-Tropez, where Renato owns the drag club downstairs from their apartment and Albin performs there as Zaza Napoli. Renato's son Laurent, from an earlier relationship, is engaged to Andréa, whose father Simon Charrier is the secretary-general of the ultraconservative Union for Moral Order. Andréa, afraid of her strict parents, has told them that Laurent's father works as a cultural attaché in the Italian diplomatic service and that his mother keeps house. Hounded by reporters after a scandal, Simon sees the marriage as a way to repair his image. Laurent invites the Charriers to dinner and asks his father to hide his homosexuality and make over the apartment.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about La Cage aux Folles (1978)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- La Cage aux Folles caught the attention of television producer Danny Arnold, who in 1979 pitched ABC a weekly series about a gay couple like the film's; he titled it Adam and Yves, a pun on Adam and Eve and an anti-gay slogan, but after months in development he dropped the show as unsustainable.
- La Cage aux Folles was inspired by Chez Michou, a real drag cabaret in Paris, which served as a model for the film's nightclub world.
