Plot summary
Campana is a private detective who specializes in disappearances, and Mr. Bens hires him when Marie, the man's daughter, vanishes in Puerto Vallarta. A month in Mexico brings Campana no lead at all, so Mr. Bens listens to Meyer, the company psychologist, who has an unusual idea. An investigator as ordinary as Campana cannot trace a woman whose life is defined by spectacular misfortune; the right man would share that trait. Meyer's candidate is François Perrin, an accountant whose own life has been one mishap after another. Summoned for a test and asked to sit at a long table, Perrin picks the single broken chair and crashes to the floor. Mr. Bens gives Perrin the case and the detective's help, and the two set off for Mexico.
