Plot summary
Charles Duchemin edits an internationally known restaurant guide and tests restaurants in elaborate disguises. Appointed to the Académie Française, he decides to retire as a critic and train his son Gérard to take over the family business, while Gérard keeps his real passion to himself: he co-founded a small circus and works there as a clown. Charles learns that Jacques Tricatel, who owns a mass-produced food company, is buying up restaurants that earned stars in the guide, and fears diners will be misled. An operative in Tricatel's pay tries to steal the nearly finished guide from Charles's offices; Charles tricks him into carrying off last year's data instead and, with Gérard, follows him to a handover with Tricatel's assistant Lambert. Charles resolves to fight back and agrees to appear on a talk show, provided Tricatel is invited too.
