William Phipps
Biography
William Phipps was an American actor and producer. He grew up in St. Francisville, Illinois, and acted in school plays before attending Eastern Illinois University. After Navy service in World War II he settled in Los Angeles and trained at the Actors' Laboratory Theatre. His performance in an Actors Lab play impressed Charles Laughton, who asked him to appear in one of his own plays. Phipps made his feature debut in Crossfire (1947). In 1949 he was cast as the speaking voice of Prince Charming in Disney's Cinderella (1950). He later guest-starred on television series including Bat Masterson and Gunsmoke. After nearly thirty years in film and television, he moved to Hawaii and hosted a movie program, then returned to Hollywood and played Theodore Roosevelt in Eleanor and Franklin, a 1976 miniseries. His final film role was in Sordid Lives (2000), which he also produced. Eastern Illinois University honored him with a film festival in 2005 and an honorary doctorate.

Big break
At the Actors Lab, Phipps and Johnson shared one role and drew straws to decide who took the matinee and who took the evening show. Phipps drew the evening performance, which Charles Laughton saw, and Laughton then came backstage to ask Phipps to act in his own play.
Big break
In 1949, Phipps tried out for the speaking role of Prince Charming in the Disney film Cinderella. The studio liked his performance, and Walt Disney personally gave him the part.
A change of course
Phipps stepped away from Hollywood and settled in Hawaii after close to thirty years of film and television work. There he presented Hollywood Oldies, a movie program, on Maui's Cable 7.
Behind the camera
Phipps acted in the 2000 independent film Sordid Lives, which was his final movie role, and he was also one of its producers.
