Plot summary
Years ago Eddie Rico kept the books for a crime syndicate; he has since settled in Bayshore, Florida, where he runs a laundry, and he and his wife Alice hope to adopt a child. Phil, a mob operative, calls to demand work and a hiding place for a man. Then a letter from Eddie's mother reports that his brothers Johnny and Gino, both still with the mob, have disappeared. Gino pulls alongside Eddie's car and begs to be smuggled out of the country, saying he fired the shots in a gang killing and that Johnny drove him. Eddie, who trusts syndicate chief Sid Kubik like a father, urges Gino to obey the order and travel to St. Louis. Kubik then summons Eddie to Miami.
