Plot summary
Roseanne Rogers has been looking for another living person since a new type of atomic bomb appeared to wipe out the human race while leaving buildings intact. She comes to the house of her aunt on an isolated hillside, where Michael has already settled. Smoke from the chimney brings two more survivors in a car, Charles and Oliver P. Barnstaple. Barnstaple, an elderly bank clerk, believes he is on vacation, and Charles looks after him. The arrivals gather at the house and try to work out how to survive.

- The hillside house that serves as the film's main setting was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright as the guesthouse of producer-director-writer Arch Oboler's Malibu ranch; it burned to the ground, leaving only its foundations, in the 2018 Woolsey Fire.
- Actor Charles Lampkin came to Arch Oboler's attention by reading James Weldon Johnson's prose poem "The Creation" on a Los Angeles television program, and Oboler then had him include excerpts of the poem in the script for Five.
- Oboler shot Five for only $75,000, staffing it with a small crew of recent University of Southern California film school graduates and starring five unknown actors.
