Biography

Walt Disney was an American animator, producer, voice actor and entrepreneur who helped shape the early American animation industry. He was born in Chicago in 1901 and grew up mostly in Missouri, then worked as a commercial illustrator before moving to California in the early 1920s and starting the Disney Brothers Studio. With Ub Iwerks he created Mickey Mouse in 1928, the year of Steamboat Willie (1928), and he voiced the character in its early years. He introduced synchronized sound, color and feature-length animation, and his films include The Skeleton Dance (1929), Flowers and Trees (1932) and Fantasia (1940). His studio made Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Pinocchio and Mary Poppins, and he opened Disneyland in 1955 and expanded into television. He won a record 22 Academy Awards and received 59 nominations, plus an Emmy and two Golden Globe Special Achievement Awards. He died in 1966.

A role that slipped away
In February 1928, Disney went to New York City to ask Mintz for more money for the Oswald series, but Mintz said no. Mintz had also gotten many of the artists to work for him, and Disney learned Universal held the rights to Oswald.

As a film producer, Disney held the record for most Academy Awards won by an individual, 22, and also for most nominations, 59.
Behind the award
Disney won another Honorary Academy Award. The prize was made up of seven miniature Oscar statuettes along with one full-sized one.
About the name
Walt Disney used the pseudonym Retlaw Yensid, his name spelled backwards, to receive a story credit on the 1966 film Lt. Robin Crusoe, U.S.N.
