Plot summary
Another ice age has the world in its grip. A city built for five million people is slowly being crushed by the advancing glacier, and the few fur-clad survivors who remain live on scavenged firewood and slim rations. Their comforts are booza, a liquor distilled from moss, and Quintet, a board game for six. Essex, a seal hunter, and Vivia, who is pregnant, come north from a south where the last seals have been killed, hoping to shelter in the home of Essex's brother Francha, a celebrated Quintet player. The city holds almost no young people, and packs of hungry mastiffs roam its corridors, disposing of the dead.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Quintet (1979)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Robert Altman had the original idea but wanted Walter Hill to write and direct it. He told author-director Lionel Chetwynd of a dream about a fantastical game of chance, envisaging a board game and a film provided Chetwynd wrote a novella as its basis; disagreements over drafts ended that.
- At the time of release, 20th Century Fox president Alan Ladd Jr. told Variety that Altman was not given final cut on what Ladd termed "a complicated picture".
- Quintet was filmed in early 1978 on the site of Montreal's Expo 67 world's fair, where extreme cold made the shoot challenging for cast and crew, and it was the first film for which Altman's son, Stephen Altman, served as property master.
