Plot summary
Rome is empty for the Ferragosto holiday weekend, and Bruno Cortona, thirty-six and never grown up, is driving his Lancia Aurelia through the streets. He calls up to Roberto Mariani, a law student studying for an exam, and asks whether he may use a telephone. To thank him, Bruno insists on buying Roberto a drink, and the reluctant student is carried off on a drive along the Via Aurelia through Lazio and Tuscany. Bruno races past slower cars, jeers at their drivers and presses Roberto to smoke and drink. At the stops Roberto thinks about slipping away, but he cannot tell Bruno that he would rather be home. He confides that he admires Valeria, the neighbor across the street to whom he has never spoken.
