Plot summary
The parchment gives its holder the right to the Apulian land of Aurocastro, in southern Italy. Attackers sell a knight's armor to a merchant, who finds the document among the knight's belongings. A band of thieves decides to claim the fief and brings the parchment to Brancaleone da Norcia, a poor knight, telling him a noble knight handed it to them before he died. Brancaleone refuses their plan. Only after he is defeated at a tournament whose prize was an overlord's daughter and a fief does he agree to lead the band toward the land.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about For Love and Gold (1966)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- The film's title outlived it: the term Armata Brancaleone is still used in Italian today to describe a group of badly assembled and poorly equipped people.
- Screenwriters Age and Scarpelli devised for the characters a mocking mixture of Italian, dialects included, and Latin for their dialogue, which became the film's most distinctive feature.
- Director Mario Monicelli said the idea came from a simple scene by Age and Scarpelli about two mediaeval peasants talking about women, and he suggested making a film that avoided Hollywood's usual Middle Ages stereotypes.
- Brancaleone is an actual historical name, meaning the paw of lions in heraldry jargon, and a Brancaleone degli Andalò served as governor of Rome in the Middle Ages.
