Plot summary
Peter Kuban, a displaced person from Hungary who survived the Nazi camps, stows away on a ship bound for New York, hoping to enter the United States under an exception for those who aided Allied soldiers. The only man who can vouch for him is a paratrooper named Tom, who plays clarinet in a Times Square jazz band and once gave Peter his military wristwatch. Inspector Bailey rules that without better documentation Peter must go back to Hungary on the same ship, which leaves in the morning. Peter leaps to the dock, breaks ribs, and starts his search in a city where his photograph is already on the front pages. In a restaurant he meets Maggie Summers, who is running after stealing a coat.
