Plot summary
Two families come together for the marriage of Muffin Brenner, whose father Snooks made millions in trucking in Louisville, Kentucky, to Dino Corelli, whose family has old money on Chicago's North Shore. Rumors that Dino's father Luigi has mob connections lead nearly every invited guest to send regrets, so only one person who is not family attends. Rita Billingsley, the wedding planner, keeps to her schedule anyway, arranging a receiving line and asking relatives and staff to walk through it so it will not look empty. Dr. Jules Meecham attends to Nettie Sloan, Dino's grandmother, who is bedridden in the mansion.
