Plot summary
Billy Brown's parents think he has spent the past five years living far away with a wife named Wendy Balsam. In truth he has been in Gowanda Correctional Facility, and the wife does not exist. On the day of his release he grabs Layla, a teenage tap dancer, and brings her home to Buffalo to play the part. The only Buffalo Bills game his mother ever missed was in 1966, when Billy was born. Billy lost a ten-thousand-dollar bet on the Bills in a Super Bowl decided by a missed field goal, and he served his time for a bookie he cannot repay. He blames the kicker.

- Filmmaker Monte Hellman was originally set to direct, but disagreements between Gallo and the producers, who wanted to wait for snow to fall, led Gallo to decide to direct the film himself.
- Gallo could not use real NFL logos or call the team the Buffalo Bills because NFL Properties was uncooperative, and when kicker Scott Norwood turned down an invitation to appear, Gallo had to change the character's name to Scott Wood.
- Gallo did not get along with Ricci on set, calling her a “puppet” who did what she was told; Ricci vowed never to work with him again and resented comments he made about her weight three or four years after filming.
- Gallo fired his original cinematographer Dick Pope and dismissed the replacement, Lance Acord, as a “button pusher” who had never shot a feature film; he also claimed Anjelica Huston caused the film to be turned down by the Cannes Film Festival.
- Kevin Corrigan chose to opt out of the credits altogether because he did not want to be associated with the film at the time.
- The 2011 game Catherine by Atlus loosely based its protagonist Vincent Brooks on Gallo's Billy Brown, and its title character Catherine on Christina Ricci's Layla.
