Plot summary
Angela is ten, and her mother Mae and father Andrew, once musicians, have set aside the lives they wanted. Mae's mood lurches between giddy highs and despair, and Andrew, trying to keep the household steady, can no longer manage her swings. With no one explaining things to them, Angela builds a private universe of order for herself and her six year old sister Ellie, piecing it together from religion, superstition and fantasy so that good and evil make sense. Angela comes to believe that only by washing away their sins can she and Ellie help her mother, and the sisters invent rituals together, reading signs in a towel slipping from a chair. They roam the neighborhood in search of a way to heaven.
