Plot summary
In 1980, during the Mariel boatlift, refugees leave Cuba for America. Juan Raul Perez, a political prisoner newly released from jail, is among them; his wife, Carmela, is already in the United States. Dorita Evita Perez is another of the refugees. An immigration clerk assumes that Juan and Dorita are married because they share a last name. The immigration service gives families priority over other arrivals, so the two agree to play along and pose as husband and wife to secure a sponsor.
