Plot summary
Laura Reynolds earns a modest living as an artist and keeps Danny, her preteen son, out of public school, teaching him herself at their home on an isolated stretch of the Big Sur coast. Three times the boy has run afoul of the law, and a judge responds by ordering him into an Episcopal boarding school, a decision his mother hates. The headmaster is Dr. Edward Hewitt; his wife Claire teaches there. They are happily married, but the school's needs and their club life have made their days routine and tamed their youthful idealism. Edward and Laura meet over the boy's admission and argue about religion and conformity, and she storms out. She tries to flee the area with Danny; the police catch them and deliver him to the school, where he finds the coursework beneath him.
