Plot summary

Brenda writes fairy tales for children and lives with her mother in Liverpool. She decides to move to London to find a father for the child she is expecting. There she takes a grubby bedsit, finds a job at a boutique run by Jimmy Lindsay, and takes a spare room in the flat of one of her co-workers, Caroline, hoping to meet a man at Caroline's parties. Her belongings are knocked from her hands one day by an attractive young man, Peter, who walks on without a second look. Peter seems to share a house with an older woman who drinks.
