Plot summary
Jane Fosset, twenty-seven and French, moves into a shabby boarding house in Notting Hill, London, taking the L-shaped room at the top of the house. She is pregnant by Terry, a former lover, and wants neither to marry him nor to end the pregnancy. A doctor's assumption that she must want one or the other annoys her into deciding to keep the child. Other residents of the house include Johnny, a trumpeter, and Mavis, an elderly former actress who lives with her cat. Jane makes friends in the house and begins a romance with Toby, a boarder who writes and earns little.
