Plot summary
Ted Bundy, a law student, meets Liz Kendall, a secretary and divorced mother, in Seattle in 1969. They start dating, and he helps her bring up her young daughter, Molly. By 1974, reports tell of several young women murdered, including two who vanished in broad daylight near Lake Sammamish, where a man who looked like Ted asked women for help with a kayak. A composite drawing of the suspect goes out, and the next year Ted is arrested. Carol DaRonch picks him out of a lineup, saying he took her and threatened to kill her and that she got away. Released on bail, Ted tells Liz that Carol had seen his photograph before the lineup and that he believes he is being set up. Liz refuses to accept that he is guilty.

The film closes with archival footage and on-screen text stating that Ted Bundy was executed on January 24, 1989, at the age of 42; he had confessed to over 30 murders days before his execution and asked that his ashes be scattered in the Cascade Mountains, where he had deposited the remains of numerous victims.
