Syd Saylor
Biography
Syd Saylor was an American performer who specialized in comedy and played sidekicks in movie westerns. He was born in Chicago in 1895. Before acting, he trained at the Art Institute of Chicago and made his living as an artist. His early stage work included circus clowning and gymnastics in vaudeville. In the silent era he played the title role in the two-reel comedy shorts Let George Do It, and his first feature-length film came in 1926. He went on to a prolific career as a character actor, known for a prominent Adam's apple and a distinctive comic voice. He moved between comedies and westerns, often as the hero's comic sidekick. On television he had small, sometimes uncredited, parts in many episodes of Maverick from 1957 to 1962, frequently acting with James Garner, and his voice made him recognizable. In the early 1950s he was the second actor to play Bozo the Clown on Hollywood's KTTV Channel 11.
