Plot summary
Phoebe Titus is the only American woman living in Tucson in the Arizona Territory of 1861, and she has formed a freight company with Solomon Warner, who owns the store. Peter Muncie rides in with a wagon train headed for California and begins courting her, though he says he will not settle in one place. He turns down her offer of a job running the company and promises to come back. When the Civil War starts, a newcomer named Jefferson Carteret helps Phoebe persuade the residents to stay on after the Union garrison withdraws. Carteret acts as her friend and secretly partners himself with her competitor Lazarus Ward, and the pair sets out to ruin her company, paying the Indian chief Mano in guns to raid her wagons.

- Arizona's shoot in the Tucson desert was hit by extreme summer heat the studio had not planned for, and delays pushed the film to $2,000,000 and cost Columbia a $500,000 loss. Director Wesley Ruggles was blamed for the loss and was never again sent to Tucson to shoot a film.
- The desert location where Arizona was shot lay dormant for a few years during World War II, then was revived and converted into a full studio; it still operates today as Old Tucson Studios.
