Plot summary
Michael Shayne is a private detective. A wealthy old dowager, Mrs. Murdock, hires him to get back a valuable antique coin that was taken from her. Mrs. Murdock is convinced that the thief is her daughter-in-law, Linda Conquest Murdock. Taking the job puts Shayne in the middle of cover-ups, fights, blackmail and gangsters. A romance comes his way during the case as well.

- In adapting Raymond Chandler's novel The High Window, the detective Philip Marlowe was replaced by Michael Shayne, played by Lloyd Nolan, with Heather Angel in a rare turn as leading lady.
- Time to Kill was the last Michael Shayne film starring Lloyd Nolan at Fox, which shut down the B-movie unit that had also made Mr. Moto, Charlie Chan and the Cisco Kid; in 1946 the series restarted at Producers Releasing Corporation with Hugh Beaumont as Shayne.
- Time to Kill was the first screen adaptation of Raymond Chandler's novel The High Window; the same book was remade five years later as The Brasher Doubloon.
