Plot summary
John Egan, a veteran criminal, intends to rob the Southwest Bank in St. Louis and retire to Mexico on the proceeds with Willy, his longtime associate. Gino, an ex-convict frightened of returning to prison, needs funds for his legal defense in a criminal case that awaits him. The gang is missing a driver, so Gino brings in George Fowler, his sister Ann's former boyfriend, a onetime college football star with no record. Egan takes a liking to George, which displeases Willy. Egan refuses to let women near his work in any way. The men collect details about the bank so Egan can work out the plan, and Gino talks George into borrowing money from Ann for a hotel room, a meeting the two keep from Egan.
