Plot summary
Eustis Clay is counting the days until his peacetime service is over and he can move on to bigger things. The young sergeant is close to Maxwell Slaughter, a master sergeant who has spent his whole career in the Army and sits at the middle of the base's supply lines, perks and back channels. Clay's scams, among them selling tickets to watch Private Jerry Meltzer run a three-minute mile, keep putting Slaughter in difficult positions, and a traffic mishap lands Clay in jail. Hoping to show Slaughter what civilian life offers, Clay arranges a date with Bobby Jo Pepperdine, a much younger woman. Slaughter is offended at first, though the two find common ground over crossword puzzles.

When the publisher of William Goldman's novel, one of the firm's first three books, demanded he change its downer ending, Goldman offered a happy ending only if the publisher guaranteed sales; it could not, so he refused.- Stuck while writing the novel, William Goldman asked his roommate, aspiring writer John Kander, to read it; Kander's suggestion to develop Bobby Jo Pepperdine as a major figure, later played by Tuesday Weld, helped Goldman finish the book.
