Plot summary
Bill Martin, a newspaper reporter, is sent to a traveling carnival in town to look into illegal activity tied to it. While he is on the assignment, his boss is murdered, and Martin is framed for the killing, so the police search for him while he tries to stay hidden. They also look for Janet, Martin's girlfriend, who has worked at the newspaper's front desk, expecting Martin to stay near her. Martin goes after evidence that will clear him, and in his absence Janet approaches Lil, who oversees the dancers in the burlesque sideshow. Lil is angry at the political boss Clay Reeves and agrees to take Janet under her protection.
