Plot summary
Theo Wilkins, a discredited American professor living abroad, sends for Paul Mason, a young thief he once mentored. Mason has just been released from prison and comes from the United States to the south of France. Wilkins has planned a robbery: $4 million in French francs from the vault beneath the Monte Carlo casino. He has gathered a crew of thieves that includes Melanie, an exotic dancer, but he wants Mason at his side to keep them in line. The gang also has an inside man at the casino.

- Rod Steiger refused to take direction during his first days on Seven Thieves, and director Henry Hathaway threatened to leave. After Steiger and studio head Buddy Adler watched the rushes, Steiger agreed to take direction and the first few days were reshot.
- Henry Hathaway wanted Dean Martin and William Powell for Seven Thieves but could not get them, so he was given Rod Steiger, who the director says was "too heavy, too intense."
