Plot summary
In London in 1916, Captain Edgar Brodie, a novelist home on leave, finds his own obituary in the newspaper. A man who gives only the letter R recruits him for a secret job: find a German agent bound for the Middle East and eliminate him. Brodie takes the name Richard Ashenden and travels with an assistant known as the General to the Hotel Excelsior in neutral Switzerland. R has also arranged a wife for him, Elsa Carrington, who asked to take part for the thrill. An American guest, Robert Marvin, keeps flirting with Elsa even after her husband arrives. The orders the pair carry are to single out the German staying in the hotel and stop him before he leaves the country.
