Junius Matthews
Biography
Junius Matthews was an American actor who worked in theater, radio and film. Born in Chicago, he began on Broadway in Young Wisdom and Any House, and in 1917 took his first screen part in the silent film The Silent Witness. He served in World War I. During the 1920s he moved between stage work and radio, voicing the Tin Woodsman in a radio adaptation of The Wizard of Oz. Westerns cast him as an old codger, miner or cook wagon master, and he appeared as Wichita on Luke Slaughter of Tombstone. He guested on television in the 1950s and 1960s. Only in the last decade of his life did he become widely known, for the Winnie the Pooh films in which he voiced Rabbit, from Winnie the Pooh and the Honey Tree (1966) to The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh (1977). He also played the owl Archimedes in The Sword in the Stone (1963). He died in 1978.
