Plot summary
Vosnia invites Dr. John Marlowe, an American surgeon then working in England, to receive the Kepler Gold Medal and to demonstrate his operating methods. He agrees, and finds during the procedure that his patient is General Niva, the dictator. Before the operation Marlowe had spoken with Colonel Galcon, who holds several ministries, including state security, and he concludes that he has learned more than the government can allow. He slips away while attention is elsewhere and the state police pursue him. Calls to the American embassy come close to trapping him. He hides in a theater, hears a woman singing in English, and goes backstage to ask Lisa Robinson for help. A barber's coat, handed to him by mistake, holds the papers of Karl Theodor.
