Plot summary
Avinash Singh Rathore, known as Tiger, is a RAW officer. In Iraq he is ordered to kill one of his own men, who has defected to Pakistan's ISI. His missions always turn violent, and his chief, Shenoy, gives him quieter work in Dublin: keeping watch on Anwar Jamal Kidwai, an Indian scientist at Trinity College suspected of developing anti-missile technology. His handler, Gopi, travels with him. Tiger invents a cover as a book author researching Indian academics, tries to get near Kidwai, and instead meets the scientist's caretaker, Zoya Nazar Jung, a dance student at the college. She invites him to a student play she has choreographed, and the two grow close.

- Director Kabir Khan first approached Shah Rukh Khan with a draft of the screenplay for what became Ek Tha Tiger; Shah Rukh Khan was interested but could not star because of scheduling conflicts with Don 2 and Jab Tak Hai Jaan.
- While shooting in Istanbul and near the Syrian and Iraqi borders, the crew of Ek Tha Tiger was mistaken for a hostile threat by the Turkish Land Forces and had to lie down at gunpoint for ten minutes until the issue was resolved.
- Ek Tha Tiger was not released in Pakistan, a major Bollywood market, because of concerns over how the film portrayed Pakistan; the decision stood despite director Kabir Khan objecting that the film did not promote anti-Pakistani sentiment.
- After release, writer Anand Panda lodged a police complaint, backed by the Screenwriters Association, that the filmmakers had stolen his screenplay; Kabir Khan and Aditya Chopra were sent first information reports and then appealed to the Bombay High Court.
- The Dublin shoot was postponed twice: after Salman Khan had surgery for trigeminal neuralgia in the United States, and after crew members in Ireland held a demonstration over filming conditions and a lack of payment.
- Ek Tha Tiger was the first Bollywood film to shoot in Cuba; the song "Lapaata" was filmed in Havana along the Malecón, at the Torreón de la Chorrera, Plaza Vieja and Havana Cathedral.
- Ek Tha Tiger premiered in Tokyo in July 2013 and was screened in 70 Japanese theaters, the widest release in Japan for a Hindi-language Bollywood film.
- Six days after release, Tourism Ireland's Indian Facebook page had gained over 23,000 followers, up from 10,000; the Irish Central Statistics Office noted a rise in overseas tourism, and minister Leo Varadkar said the film "established a foundation" for future Irish projects.
